Evening cruise on Lake Taupo
One of the less expensive things you can do in the Taupo area is an evening cruise up to some Maori rock carvings.
A little bit disappointing was the choice of the vessel as we went out on a motor boat and not the sailing ship right next to it. But there was pizza included. Alcohol was BYO and we had a bottle of decent Chardonnay with us.
The water in the lake is absolutely clear and at places you could see the ground. It was a little bit cold for the same reason too.
The rock carvings where stunning but aren’t actually that old. They were made by local artist in the late 70s. Ahh have a look to your left as well… .
We anchored a few meters away and waited for the sunset.
The crazy ones where invited to go for a swim. The water wasn’t that cold after you got over the shock to your system. So I jumped twice. There might be some pictures from shocked bystanders but I don’t have any. Should have taken my camera into the water with me.
But two times a few minutes was actually enough. The water was as cold as it was clear. I decided to put on some warm socks and a few layers of clothing afterwards.
After sunset we where on our way back again.
