Trip to Mangue Seco
So for today a trip to Mangue Seco had been planned. This little Peninsula got famous through a book by Jorge Armado whose adaption as a telenovela was shot here in 1996.
Even if it’s just 137 km according to Google maps and it thinks you should be there in 1.5 hours you better don’t count on that.
First of all the speed limit in Brazil is usually 80 km/h ( something Brazilians sometimes seem to conveniently forget, like other countrymen too). Then the streets are not always the best. Even if the Linha Verde – the toll road we were driving on is very good by Brasilian standards. But sometimes you have to pass through smaller villages where you will stop anyway.
So we started at half past five in the morning and therefore had a relaxed trip to our next destination. We even had time for a little breakfast on the road. A little bit a of excitement came due to the fact that there were no ATMs on the way that worked for us so we had to go with the money we had on us at the time.
Our next stop was noch Mangue Seco itself but a small dock next to the bridge connecting Bahia and Sergipe. The dock was located in Sergipe because going to the peninsula from Bahia would be way further. There we did some unintentional haggling as we tried to get the guys to accept our credit card to conserve cash. Which they didn’t but intead went down on the price as they guessed our intentions wrong.
A little very fast boat took us over the river to our destination. After we agreed on a time the guy would pick us up again we made landfall and went to explore the peninsula.
